God uses broken things: broken soil and broken clouds to produce grain; broken grain to produce bread; broken bread to feed our bodies. He wants our stubbornness broken into humble obedience. Vance Havner

Never take counsel of your fears.  Stonewall Jackson

The reason many Christians burn out, give out and wipe out is because we are not giving great thought and meditation to the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. “For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds” Hebrews 12:3.  Johnny Pope

Why wilt thou defer thy good purpose from day to day? Arise, and begin in this very instant, and say, "Now is the time to be doing; now is the time to be striving; now is the fit time to amend myself." Unless thou dost earnestly force thyself, thou shalt never get the victory over sin.  Thomas a Kempis

The Fool (Part 10)

The Fool

Proverbs 10:14 (KJV) 14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

During WWII the United States government had an advertising campaign to aid the war effort abroad.  One of the ads featured a slogan aimed at limiting the information citizens could inadvertently give to enemy spies. The slogan originally was known as Loose Lips might Sink Ships.
After the war the slogan became an American idiom admonishing all to avoid careless talk.

Here in Proverbs Solomon is teaching primarily the same thing.  A wise man will lay up knowledge, in other words he will remember, but not share everything he knows with everyone.  There are times where knowledge is best not shared.  For example, when we know something damaging to someone else’s character, it may not be in the best interest of all to share it with others.  When it comes to a negative circumstance the other old saying on a need to know basis could and should be applied.

Conversely, the fool tells all everything he hears and knows.  He doesn’t stop to think about how his words might hurt, damage, and possibly even destroy the live of another.   The fool can’t wait to hear the latest greatest gossip just for the thrill of sharing it with everyone.

There are two governing principles my Mother taught me concerning my words.  They are familiar and I am sure you have heard them as well.  One, if you can’t say anything nice about someone, don’t say nothin’ at all. (BTW, my Mom was quoting someone, can you guess who?)  The second saying was if you can’t say it to their face, don’t say it behind their back.

How are we doing with this verse of Scripture?  Which half of the Proverb describes us?  Are we the wise men lay up knowledge or the but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction?

Normal? ADHD and Other Over Diagnosed Mental Disorders

Normal?

By Dr. George T. Crabb

When Mark Twain's hero Huckleberry Finn was forced to study spelling for an hour every day, he said, "I couldn't stand it much longer. It was deadly dull, and I was fidgety." His teacher, Miss Watson, threatened him with eternal damnation if he didn't pay attention. Huck admits it didn't seem like such a bad alternative. "But I didn't mean no harm. All I wanted was to go somewhere; all I wanted was a change. I warn't particular."

If that happened today, Huck would have been diagnosed as ADHD, put on Ritalin or Adderall, and forced to attend school, while the book about his adventures would never have been written.

The American Psychiatric Association invented the term ADHD in 1988 to give children with hyperactivity, impulsivity, short attention span and easy distractibility a diagnosis.

Who would have thought that 24 years later over 5 million American children (8%) between the ages of 3-17 would receive this diagnosis? That is one out of 12, with about half of those on medication.

Research found that a huge predictor for the diagnosis of ADHD was the age of the child with respect to their grade. In other words, younger children in a given grade, have more ADHD symptoms than older ones. No surprise there - younger kids clearly are more restless and less able to concentrate on a topic, or sit quietly in a classroom all day long. According to the research, approximately 1.1 million children received an inappropriate diagnosis and over 800,000 received stimulant medication due only to relative maturity.

Let me quickly point out that I am not opposed to medication to treat those with severe symptoms (Proverbs 17:22), but does one out of every 12 children really have ADHD?

I wish this was just about ADHD, but that's just what I've chosen to illustrate my point. I could have chosen bipolar disorder, OCD, generalized anxiety, social anxiety or many others because this is about the over-diagnosing, over-treating and over-medicating of psychiatric problems throughout America. The first psychiatric diagnostic manual, DSM-I, in 1952 had 106 disorders listed. The revised DSM-IV in 2000 had 365. The Bible warns us against any philosophy that does not follow the teachings of Jesus in Colossians 2:8, "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."

The only word for this is "insanity!"

The National Institute of Mental Health has found that 26% of Americans have a diagnosable psychiatric illness. That comes down to one out of every four of us - that's ridiculous!

A disorder of any kind is by definition something wrong, malfunctioning. A mental disorder is an irregularity in the functioning of the brain. If the brains of one quarter of the U.S. population are in disorder then something is very, very wrong with the human brain - or with our mental health system.

What has happened is that we are teaching our society and our children to chalk up life's difficulties to mental illness and then treat them with psychiatric drugs. In many cases we are renaming sin and calling it a disorder and then treating it with medications. What is needed is for us to acknowledge our sin and then seek God's forgiveness - Psalm 32:5.

Here is the problem: The profession of psychiatry has taken on the role of defining 'normal' in our society.

As we purposely shrink the box called normal and it gets smaller and smaller, the abnormal universe expands to include almost everyone. But the psychiatric world says, "don't worry, we can fix that with a pill and make you normal just like everyone else."

My profession has not only redefine mental health by over-diagnosing and over-medicating an ever expanding number of diagnoses, we are also taking away thehope of human nature by telling our patient's that they are inherently "abnormal" and need to be fixed.

The psychiatrist's office has gone from being the place no one would be caught dead visiting...to a place where a pill could fix anything. And psychiatry itself has gone from being stigmatized to glamorized.

We must help people to think that it's okay to be "not normal" and change the mindset that everything can be "fixed" with a pill or a few therapy sessions.

We must help them understand that what they perceive as their worst trait, may in reality be their best.

It's time for a new order of business in mental health, based on the premise that when you try to conform to a perceived "normal," you lose your uniqueness - which is the foundation for your individuality.

Psalm 139:14, "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Depression and Anxiety Part 2

Depression and Anxiety

Part 2

Dr. George T. Crabb

Depression and anxiety are often companions. Any person who is depressed may also experience symptoms associated with anxiety. About 80% of depressed individuals suffer psychological anxiety symptoms: unrealistic apprehension, fears, worry, agitation, irritability or panic attacks. Around 60% of people with depression experience anxiety related physical symptoms: headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue and chronic pain. Approximately 65% of depression sufferers experience sleep disturbances. Some 20% feel agitated. About 25% experience phobia. Around 17% report generalized anxiety symptoms. Approximately 10% suffer from panic attacks.

Fear and anxiety attack and cripple both our physical, soulical and spiritual functioning. They also put us into spiritual bondages that hinder our relationship to God. Anxiety and fear are cousins. However, unlike fear, anxiety has no precipitating cause. Fear usually focuses on something, like a frightening event that we must face.

Anxiety can manifest itself in forms such as nervousness, excessive tension or a sense of fear that is unwarranted. It often results in sleeplessness, restlessness and an inability to concentrate.

Anxiety disorders affect women twice as often as men. A panic attack is a severe form of anxiety in which the heart races. Many times the person hyperventilates. He also has sweaty palms and extreme apprehension for no apparent reason. This is simply an adrenaline rush come up which is a fight-or-flight reaction that simply occurs at the wrong time.

One of the best ways to relieve anxiety is to exercise aerobically at least 3-4 times a week, which includes walking, bicycling and swimming. This exercise should last for at least 20-30 minutes.

Patients with anxiety also should take a comprehensive vitamin and mineral supplement. This program can include 5 HTP which is 5-hydroxytrytophan. You should not take 5 HTP if you are taking any other antidepressant. B-complex vitamins are very beneficial for anxiety states. Certain herbs are also helpful for reducing anxiety. These include valerian, chamomile, skullcap, hops and passion flower. However, these herbs may cause drowsiness. Passion flower tea and chamomile tea are helpful for relieving anxiety as well.

Commonly used drugs to treat anxiety include Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Valium and other benzodiazepines. These drugs are very addictive, and as many as 80 million prescriptions are written for them each year. These minor tranquilizers numb the human mind (a part of our soul). But when the medicine wears off, the person actually can become more anxious which leads to more use and abuse of the drugs.

For panic attack disorders, I recommend B complex vitamins, adrenal glandular supplements and adrenal support. The fight-or-flight response involved in panic attacks commonly drains the adrenal glands leading to other problems. These important glands need to be supported by both vitamins and glandular.

Foundational to the treatment of depression and anxiety is daily meditating on the Word of God. It also benefits to read Scriptures that come against fear and worry. You should pray as often as you are able.

I recommend that all my patients with anxiety quote Scripture aloud three times a day before meals, meditate on them throughout the day and again quote the Scriptures before going to bed.

Pray often, quote Scriptures in your prayers and think on the promises of God. I will give you some verses at the end of this blog that you should write down and memorize so that you may meditate on them later. Write these verses down and put them in places where you can see them - attach sticky notes to your computer or anchor Scriptures with magnets on your refrigerator.

The Word of God is an effective antidote in daily life for both depression and anxiety. God has created natural ways as well as spiritual prescription for battling and defeating depression and anxiety in your life. In these two blogs you have discovered many positive steps to overcome depression and anxiety. Don't turn back or become discouraged. Continue to move forward with God as you live in His joy and peace.

The Fool (Part 9)

The Fool

There are 36 references to the word fool in Proverbs alone and over 80 references when you consider its derivatives.  Most of Proverbs deals with comparisons between two people, the wise and the foolish.
Here is the 9th mention of the word fool in the book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 10:8 (KJV) 8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

The wise man recognizes good advice and accepts it. The fool is impervious to any advice.  The word prating means lips and is reference to one who talks nonstop.  The fool is one who is so busy talking that he doesn’t listen to the advice or words of others.
Robert Schuller said; Big egos have little ears.

A wise old owl sat on an oak; The more he saw the less he spoke; The less he spoke the more he heard; Why aren't we like that wise old bird?

Shel Silverstein

The obvious teaching of this proverb is our talking should not interfere with our listening.  The wise not only listens, but knows when to listen.  He hears and he learns.  He is more concerned with learning than then being heard.
